In 1943, one of the most interesting modifications to the Skytrain was made when the C-47B-DL s/n 42-5671 at La Guardia Field in Long beach was fitted with Edo Model 78 floats, each with two hydraulically retractable wheels and an internal tank with a capacity of 1,136 litres.These floats, the largest not only in their day, weighed a ton each and were 16.46 m long. This machine was designated the XC-47C and was tested at Wright Field in operation on water, land and ice. Its flying qualities were satisfactory, but it made landing on anything other than calm water a problem, and the heavy damage to the tires, together with the large side surface, uncomfortable in crosswinds, made landing on dry land difficult. The load capacity of the machine thus modified also suffered greatly. Nevertheless, Edo received an order for 150 sets of floats (which were said to be able to be jettisoned in flight) for field modifications, and C-47C amphibious machines saw limited service in Alaska and New Guinea. Certainly the C-47-DL s/n 41-18582 and C-47A-DK s/n 42-92699, and possibly some others, were converted to floatplanes.
