In 1943, plans were made for a new form of the Panthera tower, which was to be used for the planned evolutionary step of this medium tank, which was to be Panther II. Drawings of the new tower dated to November 7, 1943 showed the tower with a new gable ( schmale Blendenausführung). The coaxially mounted machine gun was to be mounted outside the cannon shield in the reinforced frontal armor of the tower 120 mm thick. Another development proposal for the new tower was the design of the company Rheinmetall, which presented the drawing documentation ( H-SK 88517) dated to 1.3 .1944. It was supposed to be a tower based on the tower of the classic Panther, but it had thicker armor (front - 120 mm, sides and butt - 60 mm and ceiling - 40 mm). The shield was schmale Blendenausführung and the tower was to have a modified shape, which was forced by the installation of a stereoscopic rangefinder. Its front ceiling was raised, see. picture below. The command tower was to be standard from the production version Panthera Ausf.A. In the spring of 1944, the development of the new tower was moved to the company Daimler Benz and WaPrüf 6 entered new specifications:

- eliminate possible bouncing of missiles from the cannon shield to the hull ceiling above the driver's compartment,
- increase the thickness of the armor protection without weight gain,
- reduce the front surface of the tower as much as possible to make it more difficult for the tower to intervene, but with a view to maintaining sufficient space in the tower for crew work,
- the optical equipment was to be supplemented by a stereoscopic rangefinder,
- commonly used coaxial machine gun MG 34 was to replace MG 42,
- production costs should be reduced,
- easy conversion of the serial tower into a tower of the command tank and installation of infrared equipment should be ensured,
- production time was to be reduced
- the running diameter of the tower was to be maintained as in the case of conventional Panthers at 1650 mm.

The new design of the tower was named Schmalturm. The installation of a new tower was assumed for Panther G and later for a new development version Panther F. Production was to move smoothly from one version to another. The main armament was to consist of a modified cannon Kw.K. 42 L/70. Under the name Kw.K.44/1 it was developed in the company Škoda Plzeň. The cannon did not have a muzzle brake and had an improved braking mechanism. The elevation ranged from -8 ° to + 20 °. The hydraulic control of the tower has been modified. The tower could rotate 360 ° in 30 seconds at maximum rotation speed. The tower had a modified command turret (lowered) from which the observation periscope T.S.R. 1 without having to open the lid. The first prototype was an observation periscope of the charger, the serial tower was eliminated. It was originally planned to use the monocular sight T.Z.F. 13 of Leitz, but serial machines were to receive stabilized periscope sights S.F.Z. 1 located under the armored protective cover in the left front of the tower ceiling. Five prototypes were produced before the end of 1944, another 4 pieces of a modified version S.Z.F. 1b v 1-2/1945. The Zeiss, Jena stereoscopic rangefinder had a lens pitch of 1.32 meters. The prototype was not made, plans envisaged completion in 4/1945.

In addition to the new Schmalturm, the new Panther F was to have a modified supporting platform/hull and its equipment. The thickness of the hull armor increased (in front of the tower - 40mm, under the tower - 25mm, engine cover - 16mm). The driver and radio operator covers have been modified. When opening, the lids lifted slightly and slid to the sides. Machine gun MG 34 mounted in the hull was replaced by an assault rifle StG 44. The radio equipment consisted of FuG 5. Additional equipment when changing from a standard tank to a command, was placed in the tower. The standard Panther F was to have a pair of antennas in preparation for such a conversion to a command machine. The standard was also the preparation for the assembly of the infrared device FG 1250. According to the regulation WaPrüf of 20.2.1945, only all-metal castors were to be assembled from production from 5/1945. The reason was the lack of a strategic raw material for rubber. Of interest is the shape of the connecting "locks" of the armor plates of the front and sides of the hull, which differed in previous versions of the Panther.

The machines were to be manufactured in factories MAN, Daimler Benz, Krupp, Nibelungenwerk a MNH. According to reports, the only completed platforms Panthera F with towers from Panthera G supplied by Daimler Benz v Berlin-Marienfelde. If these machines were actually delivered to combat units participating in the battle for Berlin, then it is likely that this happened between April 20-23, 1945. A specific unit is also given, namely II./Panzer-Regiment 2 ( "Müncheberg" ???) located near the production plant .
After the war, one tower was tested for USA and one to Great Britain (the remains of the fired tower were are located in the Tank Museum in Bovington).

Schmalturm a 8.8cm cannon

We know the popular but erroneous depiction of the evolutionary predecessor of Panther F, ie Panther II with the tower Schmalturm s 8, 8cm Kw.K. 43 L/71 is misleading and the source of this statement is the publication work of Mr Spielberger. These claims are refuted by another renowned historian Tom Jentz. Due to the period when the Panther II project was implemented and stopped, the designs of the Schmalturm tower were not yet available.
Krupp worked on the project of the modified tower Schmalturm in an earlier period. Preliminary drawing documentation dated 18.10.1944 was created. The design was shown by a drawing marked Hln-130. With this proposal, the company on December 4, 1944 won a contract for further development and production of the tower. The developers claimed that the 8.8 cm cannon was mounted with minimal modifications to the existing tower Schmalturm, but with the fact that due to the return mechanism of the cannon must create space in the rear of the tower, resp. the pin on which the cannon was to rotate vertically (elevation) was to move 350 mm forward. This adjustment was necessary to create enough space to charge the weapon. The form of the thus modified Panther was shown in the sketch of the company Krupp in the drawing Hln-E142 of 17.11.1944.
At the meeting of the Entwicklungskommission Panzer of 23 January 1945, the representative of WaPrüf 6 reported on the company's proposal Daimler Benz. For the successful mounting of the 88 mm cannon, the design included a 100 mm larger diameter of the tower than used in the standard Panther (1750 mm instead of the original 1650 mm). The supply of ammunition for the cannon was to consist of 56 rounds, the weight of the tower was to add up to one ton. At this time, a wooden model of the tower was already made.
On February 20, 1945, a meeting of representatives of the army and manufacturers was held, where the submitted proposals were to be compared. The simplicity of the project of the company Krupp was awarded, which solved a quick modification of the already designed tower Schmalturm. Subsequently, WaPrüf 6 entrusted the company Krupp with the responsibility for the production of the weapon and the company Daimler Benz for tower production.
On February 27, 1945, the final specifications for the new turret set (including complete instrumentation including a new stereoscopic rangefinder and stabilized shooting sight SZF2 or SFZ3). A prototype of unarmored steel was ordered. The interesting thing was that the wooden model had the rear armor perpendicular, while the prototype was to have this plate oblique.
March 8, 1945, the company Krupp was asked to develop a cannon shield (similar to Topfblende) until March 12, 1945.
In consultation with the Generalinspekteur der Panzertruppen of 14.3.1945, some details were specified. There was to be an emergency supply of 15 rounds for the cannon in the tower, the remaining 50-54 rounds were to be stored in the hull. At the request of the Generalinspekteur der Panzertruppen, a prototype machine, a Panther with a modified body (increased running diameter) and a tower of unarmoured steel, was to be produced. The planned completion of the prototype Panthera with such a tower was at the beginning of 6/1945 and the planned serial production was to begin in the last quarter of 1945. Plans also included that the previously manufactured machines Panther were to be retrofitted into a machine with an 8.8 cm cannon. According to the report of the Minister of Industry Albert Speer Adolf Hitler this prototype was to be presented in the middle of 4/1945 at the presentation new weapons. However, the post-war investigation showed that the only thing that was completed on December 12, 1944 was a wooden model of the tower in the company Daimler Benz. It reached the end of the war and was registered in the factory Daimler Benz in 8/1945. Her other destinies are unknown.
So the possible serial form of the tower Schmalturm with an 8.8 cm cannon should be used in the future version Panthera F, resp. it was to rearm the surviving previous versions of Panther.

Most likely the same machine captured in other photos. He has a pair of handles welded to his frontal armor that appear to have been removed later. The identification of the type is clear according to the shape of the locking of the upper side armor and the front armor of the body. In the last moments of war production, the hulls were manufactured in two factories. Ruhlstahl produced hulls with classic locking, as all Panther tanks had, probably Daimler-Benz also produced the hulls themselves, which had a modified locking. According to the photographs, this characteristic feature is clearly identified. The bodies in the picture above, which come from the Daimler-Benz factory in Berlin, have the same locking.
