At the end of March 1945, after the British troops had fought their way into the North German Plain and the Americans had surrounded Army Group B in the Ruhr, orders were given to immediately assemble a new standby unit in Military District XI from all available Wehrmacht, Reichswehr and Volkssturm units and deploy it to the Weser River line.
The Military District Command ordered the Bergen Tank School to form a tank division, although at that time there were no tanks, artillery or other heavy equipment available in Bergen.

On 29 March 1945, the division's vanguard, reinforced by the "Panzerjägerbrigade Bergen"(a bicycle unit armed with Panzerfausts), set out to take up position on Weser. However, due to lack of weapons, ammunition and supplies, he was unable to stop the American 2nd Armored Division and was crushed at Rinteln. The rearguard could not make contact with the division and had to retreat to the Harz Mountains.

From the shattered remnants of the division, its commander, Colonel Grosan formed the battle group "Kampfgruppe Grosan", which briefly held positions on the Aller River line at Soltau, then crossed the Elbe, withdrew to Schleswig-Holstein, and finally capitulated at Bad Segeberg. For commanding the battle group that repulsed the attack at Soltau and destroyed 115 enemy tanks, Colonel Grosan was awarded the Knight's Cross on 8 May 1945.
