The first truly airborne fighter version of the Crusader was the F8U-2, renamed the F-8C after 1962. The prototype YF8U-2 was originally a production F8U-1, modified for the more powerful J57 engine, and first flew on 20 August 1957. In addition to other modifications forced by the new engine, two rails were added to the fuselage sides for Sidewinders, but they were used minimally on production machines due to the severe deterioration in flight characteristics and the heavy nose.
