THAAD system with AN/TPY-2 radar in South Korea. The radar needs a hardened area of about 8000 m2 for self-deployment. There must be a clear space of about 50,000 m2 around the emplacement due to antenna radiation.

The 9,2 m2 antenna is made up of a total of 25344 gallium-nitride transmit and receive modules.

AN/TPY-2 - video showing the radar's inclusion in the missile defence system. The radar can operate in two modes of operation - in the so-called forward mode with a range of 1,000 to 2,000 km (the figure is only an estimate, subject to classification) and in the terminal mode (range of about 600 km). In forward mode, positioned close to the adversary, the radar detects missile launches and, depending on their initial trajectory, assesses their danger. It sends the detected data to the command and control network for further processing and exploitation. In this mode, the radar is not capable of homing anti-missile missiles on the detected targets. In terminal mode, the radar provides detection, targeting and tracking of missiles (and attempts to distinguish warheads from decoys) in the descending portion of the flight trajectory, with the data collected being used to guide anti-missile missiles, e.g. from the THAAD system. Reconfiguration between modes takes an experienced operator about 8 hours.
