Kalinin K-10 (Kalinin K-10)


In mid-1930, GROSS (GROSS - Гражданское doświadczeńное самолетостроение ) begins work on a new design - the K-10 aircraft. Basically, it is an improved version of the "činovnichesky" (облисполкомовский) K-9, a machine built for headquarters contacts with the regions, and also for sport-training purposes. In concept, the K-10 was a self-supporting low-wing monoplane of mixed design. The elliptical, wooden wing, equipped with slots, provided good stability. The wings could be folded backwards, rotating in knots at the trailing edge along the fuselage. This reduced the external dimensions of the machine and allowed it to be transported, without dismantling, on railway wagons.


The fuselage was designed as a closed fuselage, the airframe welded from steel tubes, covered with plywood and canvas. Open cockpit fitted with wind shields and equipped with dual controls.


Petrol tanks located in the wings held a fuel supply for a total of eight hours of flight. The 100 hp M-11 engine was first housed in an enclosed Cowling-type cowling. The landing gear was fitted with aerodynamic wheel covers and brakes, which improved landing characteristics - reducing the length of time the machine was on the ground.


Due to problems with low engine power - and there was simply no other engine available at the time - the aircraft was able to develop a maximum speed of 175 km/h during tests, which did not impress either the acceptance committee or the designers themselves.


In the agricultural version it could be equipped with a chemical tank and sprayers, otherwise it was to serve mainly as a communication and courier machine. The designer also envisaged the possibility of using it as a school aircraft.


In 1932, an attempt was made to lighten the machine - instead of a complete cowling, a Townend ring was installed on the engine, and the aerodynamic covers were removed from the landing gear, but even in this form the K-10 did not make it into the series.
