The foundation of the tank museum in Kubinka dates back to 1 August 1938. On this date, the order of the Defence Committee under the Council of People's Commissars No. 180 was issued, which was entitled "On the use of old and non-serial tanks in the armament of the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army", thus creating a museum of fighting machines (tanks, armoured cars and self-propelled guns) at the scientific research polygon of armoured vehicles and tanks in Kubinka near Moscow. The basic aim of the museum was to familiarize designers, students of military academies with their own and foreign armored vehicles, as well as to encourage patriotic sentiments of the servicemen. The greatest expansion of the numbers of equipment occurred in the years of the Second World War, and especially with utility equipment.
Until 1972, individual exhibits were placed in the open, covered only by tarpaulins. At the beginning of the 1970s, pavilions were built in which the technology was subsequently placed and in which it remains to this day. Until 1996, the museum was only open to researchers, designers and members of the military. In that year, the museum was removed from the 38th Scientific Research Institute of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation and opened to visitors.
The museum now covers an area of over 12 hectares (120,000 m2), with administrative buildings, warehouses and workshops in addition to exhibition pavilions. The museum owns more than 350 examples of tanks and combat vehicles, 60 of which are not found in any other museum in the world.
A total of seven pavilions in the museum are currently (31.08.2015) open to the general public: 1st pavilion - heavy tanks of the USSR 2nd pavilion - medium tanks of the USSR Pavilion 3 - USSR light tanks and airborne troops equipment 4th pavilion - tracked and wheeled equipment of the USSR 5th pavilion - tank equipment of Great Britain, Canada and USA 6th pavilion - tank equipment of fascist Germany 7. pavilion - tank equipment of European countries and Japan The 8th pavilion is not open to the public, as it is used for scientific research on modern types of equipment.
Based on the Order of the Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation № 811 of 30.10.2014, the designation of the museum was changed and it became a branch of the newly established Military Patriotic Park of Culture and Recreation of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation "Patriot" (Военно-патриотический parku культуры и отдыха Вооруженных Сил Российской Федерации "Патриот"). Upon completion of this megalomaniacal project by 27.12.2016, it is planned to relocate the entire museum to the premises of the Patriot Park.
Having personally visited the museum at the end of August 2015, I can responsibly state that the Kubinka Museum, after the partial and still ongoing reconstruction of the halls, entrance and the entire complex, has become one of the world's other great museums (except for the toilets, which are amazing). However, a significant drawback from the point of view of photographers is the impossibility to legally get in the halls behind the exhibits, as well as the placement of windows in the halls directly behind the exhibits, which makes it significantly more difficult to take pictures with a regular camera or mobile phone. Although, on the other hand, current high-quality cameras can more or less eliminate this unpleasant backlight.
