Liudolf is the first historically documented member of the genus Liudolfovců, termed by its most important members also like Otoni. The genus probably originated from Thuringia and held alodiální land in the western foothills of the Harzu and durynských Oak fields. During the wars, which led Charles I. The great with the Saxons, were his members on the side of the franského of the sovereign, for which they received in Saxony fief of another land and apparently even different offices. Even Liudolfův origin is not entirely clear. Was born in 805 or 806. As his parents are referred to the margrave Bruno (or Brunhard) and Gisela of Verla. According to other sources she was his mother, Addida, daughter of the saxon magnate Ekberta and saint Ida of Herzfeldu. As my wife had Odu, whose father was a frankish princeps Billing and the mother of Aeda. Oda Liudolfovi conceived several children. Their numbers indicate the sources differently, most often between seven and twelve.
Both also jointly performed the pilgrimage to Rome, where they gained the consent of pope Sergio II. to build a monastery kanovnic in the ancestral property of the church in Brunshausenu and also the relics of the holy popes Anastasia And. and Innocent Also. designed just for the new monastery, which Liudolf, Oda and hildesheimský bishop Altfrid founded in the year 852. The under then prospered under the energetic leadership of his daughters, and that on the original site after the translation to the nearby Gandersheimu in the year 881. Liudulf led východosaské troops in the fighting Louis II. German against the Vikings and Polabským the Slavs and used to be sometimes referred to as the duke of east Saxony (dux orientalium Saxonum), or the duke ostfálského. However, the war merit and numerous marital ties with the carolingians allowed the genus flourish further. During the reign of his sons Brunona and Ota to the dukedom extended to the whole of Saxony.
