Russian T-62M/MV tanks are undergoing upgrades and improvements to more modern systems such as thermal imaging at the 103rd Tank Repair Plant in the city of Chita in southeastern Russia; the Russian military plans to upgrade at least 800 T-62 tanks at the plant.



A special military operation carried out by Russian troops in Ukraine showed the need for the use of tanks in combat operations, as well as their insufficient number. The production capacity of Uralvagonzavod, which produces modern T-90M and modernizes T-72 and T-80 tanks, is fully utilized. Against this backdrop, the decision was made to modernize the stored T-62 tanks.


Last year, the 103rd Tank Repair Plant, located in the urban-type settlement of Atamanovka near Chita in Zabaikalsky Krai, received a contract to modernize 800 T-62M tanks; work has been underway for several months. To date, the enterprise has already sent several batches of upgraded tanks to the "special operation" zone.


As explained at the plant, the tanks come from the depot in a non-combat condition, after which they are completely disassembled, parts and equipment are exchanged for them, and already with the modernization in mind, assembly is underway. The upgraded T-62s receive modules of additional multi-layer hull and turret armour, "Contact" trailer-mounted dynamic protection and lattice turret protection against cumulative "RPG-7" type shells.


In addition, the upgraded T-62M is equipped with a new fire control system that significantly increases the effectiveness of using the 2A20 (U-5TS) Molot 115 mm cannon, which now has the capability to use long-range missiles. An electromechanical mast with a multispectral gyro-stabilized optoelectronic system, thermal imaging cameras, a television camera, and a laser rangefinder are also installed on the tanks, and the engine is modified and a new 780 horsepower diesel engine is installed.


The upgraded T-62M is said to match the level of the Russian T-72 and T-80 tanks in service. Primarily, the upgraded tanks use units established in new Russian territories.

Defence Expres editorial staff published a photo of the Russian FAB-500M-62 bomb with additional wing sets by AONPO Bazalt (AO NPO "Bazalt"). In Russian-language literature, the additional wing sets are abbreviated as MPK (Module of Planning and Correction, MPK). The additional wings are supposed to extend the bomb's range by 30 to 40 km, and when dropped in low-level flight the range is said to drop to 6 to 7 km. The additional MPK wings are also intended to provide manoeuvrability.
However, Polish aviation columnist Piotr Butowski does not foresee the GLONAS satellite guidance system being fitted to MPK kits.
