A senior Russian police officer from Smolensk has been charged with trying to smuggle weapons and grenades into Russia from occupied eastern Ukraine. His contraband was discovered at a border crossing and he now faces a lengthy prison sentence if proven guilty.
Telegram channel "What about Rostov?" reports that a criminal prosecution has been opened against Police Major Alexander Yefimov, the head of Department No. 5 of the Interior Ministry's State Transport Inspectorate for the Smolensk region.
He allegedly returned from a military trip to the "Luhansk People's Republic" with an assault rifle AK-74, 28 rounds of 5.45 mm calibre ammunition and four cluster grenades RGD-5. They were hidden in a bag in the boot of the KAMAZ truck.
According to "What about Rostov?", "the cache was discovered by border guards in early February when the truck was leaving the special military operation zone for the Rostov region and was stopped for checks at the Donetsk (Izvarino) checkpoint."
Until recently, however, it was not known to whom the bag belonged. Yefimov was identified and charged on 19 April with two counts of "illegal acquisition, transfer, storage and transportation of weapons and explosive devices". He faces up to 8 years in prison.
It is unclear who supplied the weapons or why Yefimov tried to smuggle them into Russia, where firearms and explosives are tightly controlled but would likely be valuable on the black market. The investigation is ongoing.
The case is part of an apparent increase in arms smuggling along the Russian-Ukrainian border. On 19 April, it was also reported that border guards found a cache of 12 F1 and 5 RGD-5 grenades and 15 UZRGM lighters near the Kuybyshevo-Avtodorozhny checkpoint.
The following day, it was reported that a 30-year-old mobilized soldier named Islam M., from Kabardino-Balkaria, was arrested on the Rostov-Taganrog highway with 10 TNT charges and 2 detonators in his UAZ car. He now faces criminal charges.
These incidents come against the backdrop of a sharp rise in violent crime in Russia involving firearms and explosives, especially in border areas such as Rostov.




According to the Prosecutor General's Office, the number of crimes in Russia related to the use of firearms and ammunition has increased by 32% since April 2022, and these figures may be an underestimate. Most of the weapons ended up in the Kursk and Belgorod border regions, as well as in Moscow. Among the leaders in arms theft are elite units of the Defense Ministry, paratroopers from Pskov, GRU special units, and units of the Interior Ministry's internal units.

Ukraine's General Staff says that over the past 24 hours, defense forces have repelled Russian attacks near the following settlements:
- Hryhorivka, Khromove, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Novokalynove, Maryinka (Donetsk oblast).



The bridge north of Oleska is still standing, indicating that there is still a Russian presence.

A PR campaign has been launched in Russia to celebrate Peskov's son Nikolai Peskov. First, Prigozhin said that Peskov's son fought with him in the Wagner PMC (which is not true). And then Sergei Markov decided to confirm this information.


Markov posted a photo of Peskov's son taking the oath of office. True enough, upon closer examination, it turned out that Peskov's son is the son of Poroshenko, who is swearing an oath of allegiance to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Moreover, next to him in the photo was even Poroshenko himself.


The photo caused a sensation. When Markov sobered up, he removed it and promised to sort everything out.
